Why Ital is Vital

In all my studies about nutrition I found many theories of what one should eat. Many diets, some leaving out something, others focusing on there thing are out in this world, all of them claiming to promote health.

What helped me on my quest for health is to search for the most natural alternative to replace the one I was socially conditioned to partake off. For me that meant I had to replace milk, cheese, butter, meat, over processed flower products, unhealthy seasonings as well as unhealthy cooking practices to access nutrients more suitable for my needs. Off course I found myself swimming against the current most off the time. Sometimes it was a challenging, but overall satisfying journey from cultural conditioning to natural reality.

So when you feel that sitting around a table and eating off all kinds of exotic creatures could not be the heights of human development, welcome to real life.

So beautiful is the institution of creation, that many versions of the same game called life can be played at the same time, each one bringing its own rewards.

I found that changing the way I eat helped I find out a lot about myself and the environment of which I came from.

Now it seems completely logical to nourish myself the way I choose, but when I look back I can see why my ways turned around completely. What I find fascinating is how people defend there ways of life, even when they intellectually agree with me that ital levity, meaning the absence of animal products, processed foods, salt, and artificial anything, is really the way to go. Some get almost fanatical in defending there right to nyam of every living thing on earth, even quoting the bible to let me know God gave them permission to do so. (That is the same book that teaches you that you shall not kill. I will never figure out that one!)

Not even there doctor's advice to cut back on that fat crap that clogs up there inside helps.

I found very few individuals willing to stop sacrificing there lives in order to save others. And in a way I find that puzzling, especially so in a world full of god-fearing people claiming to be on a path of righteousness.

I found it much easier to change from my old ways then to go on and suffer the consequences of not doing so.

Next to replacing animal products, creating your own salt seems to be the most challenging part of this transition. It is again a point that Rasta's helped me most in realizing the problems of society's ways and to find alternatives of supplying the essential nutrients naturally.

I've learned that sodium chloride is a preservative. In that capacity it is likely to interfere with digestion, which in my observation is just a controlled breakdown of substances. People crave salt because of (bad) habit. What the body needs are mineral salts and they can be obtained from plants. Sodium chloride, (common salt, sea salt and its artificial cousins like MSG provide a cheap, deadly alternative to satisfy the tastes of a semiconscious consumer.

Our task then is to create our own salts, or more correctly, utilizing the various salts nature has for us. Common herbs and spices like pimento, cinnamon, thyme, rosemary, garlic, onion, scallion, tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, parsley, celery, purslane, turmeric, lemongrass, lemon, lime, ruccola, cilantro, fennel, basil or chives are just some of the many plants that supply us with all we need. Use them plentiful instead of ready made artificial powders that promise magic and deliver problems and appreciate the amounts it takes to create that desire taste of yours, as all the above mentioned plants have proven medicinal ingredients. And since prevention is better then cure, the intelligent reader will take up the challenge and partake of this live giving palette provide by creation.

It might prove to be the most important step on your journey to a more natural life, after giving up animal products. And it is also the most challenging. It might take years to reach a level where you can go through life without any of the harmful products in your daily not recommended intake you consciously are trying to avoid.

My recommendation is you make it a challenge and not a problem, with determination, much is possible, and so you can succeed.

Everybody loves to sprinkle a dash of salt on their meals. But, at the end of the day, when you're feeling a little bloated, you can blame salt as the culprit.

According to a recent report, experts found that Americans have too much salt in their diet, exceeding the daily recommended amount. And you may be surprised to find that what you think are healthy food products may be high in sodium. Did you know that a bowl of Cheerios has more sodium than a serving of Ruffles potato chips?
Also, reducing salt intake doesn't necessarily reduce the risk of high blood pressure or a family history or hypertension.

To lessen the grief of salt lovers, we've asked an expert to break down the basics about salt -- what to look for and what we should know.
Is salt bad for you?
No. If used appropriately, salt is not bad for you. We're not required to eat [table] salt because we can find salt naturally occurring in a variety of different foods that we eat. But most cultures around the world use salt and have a hypertension epidemic.

What is salt?
Salt is basically sodium chloride -- two essential minerals required by the body that helps communication between cells and many of the required processes. It is very much responsible for fluid balance in our bodies. Salt is naturally occurring -- kosher or Epsom, it can come from the sea and from minerals.

How much salt is too much?
The dietary guidelines for Americans clearly show lower amounts of sodium in the diet. Currently, 2300 milligrams is the recommended amount. However, a typical American diet ranges from 3000 to 5000 milligrams of sodium. For our bodies to survive, we need about 500 milligrams. A teaspoon of salt is close to the 2400 milligrams.

The salt shaker at the dinner table is the smoking gun. The stealth danger is under the radar in convenience and frozen packages and fast foods. Those prepackaged foods and meals have the highest sodium intake.

Does salt make you fat?
It doesn't. I have not seen any research that suggests sodium affects fat deposition in the body. People are complaining about fat due to fluid retention and that’s what they are seeing on the scale.

Why does salt make you bloated?
Some people can be more sodium sensitive than others. Too much sodium can cause fluid retention –- that is, fluid being caught in between the cells. You would notice your ankles swollen or find your ring a bit snug. In the short term, it may be a discomfort but in the long term, too much sodium quite often leads to high blood pressure, which is not a good thing. Quite often blood pressure medicines are diuretics.

Who should be concerned?
I think everybody should be concerned, not just those with a family history of hypertension. Before, blood pressure of 120/80 was thought to be normal but now might be at a pre-hypertensive range. More Americans are suffering from hypertension.

Beyond high blood pressure and hypertension, recent research suggests that too much sodium can be attributed to bone loss. And bone loss is escalating among men, not just in women.

I think it's a really good idea to monitor what you are eating and look for physical clues. Again, if you’re having swelling of the lower extremities or hands, that’s a good indication to see the doctor. Have your blood pressure checked regularly.

Which foods have high amounts of sodium?
Generally, there is no high sodium in fruit, vegetable or grains. And there’s a safe bet that meat isn’t high in sodium unless it is smoked or preserved.

Beans are a good nutritional source except canned beans contain various levels of sodium.

And convenience packaging and mixed meals contain high amounts. It would be hard to say that their is no sodium content in a prepackaged meal.

Here are some photos from the fit trip that Keith R shot. Shawn with a nice one handed table at astoria banks. We all had a good time, Robo, Mikey, dehart, ed, tom, Bf, nick benson, me, shawn, keith r, and the filmer jordan. Good vibes on the trip. We hit up a few bike shops like tryone,s new shop in the city, it looks good and its right by the brooklyn banks. there was a good demo at long island bike shop. I was siked to see how many riders there are on the island, the scene is definately growing. this little kid got his brand new fit stolen but the filmer that was on the trip happen to film the theft. so we kept watching the tape and seen who the kid was that stole it, so kenny and rich (pictured below) went to the kids house and got the bike back. it was a blessing for that little kid and for the rest of the day. give thanks. IanI was in a Brooklyn yesterday riding around reasoning with my Rasta Fam and I ran into this culture music store and herd some Midnite I ain't never herd be for, The reason why is that it just droped this week. This is the craziest album I think I ever herd it doesn't matter if you are into reggae or not go get this. If you have stereo system that has alot of base turn it up all the way.This album is based on sound waves so when a individual listens to it creates chemicals in the brain that really make you feel positive. All music creates subliminal message weather positive or negative.Hearing is the ability to collect, process and interpret sound. Sound vibrations travel through air, water, or solids in the form of pressure waves. When a sound wave hits a flexible object such as the eardrum it causes it to vibrate, which begins the process of hearing. The process of hearing involves the conversion of acoustical energy (sound waves) to mechanical, hydraulic, chemical, and finally electrical energy where the signal reaches the brain and is interpreted. We just seen the new Ridebmx video "insight" an our boy from good old long island is shining hard. Alot of people who ride bikes are sleeping on Mark Gralla an don't kno hes been doing his own thing for so long and hes from long island.We used to meet up with mark all the time to ride he lived a couple towns away from us so he would take the train in an everybody would meet up with him at the train station. We usually ride around or wait for another train to bring us all the way out east to greenport skate park at the tip of long island. I remember mark all ways being a trooper he would be down for anything that let him ride his bike more. Many times mark as stayed at justins house on the floor while justins dog did him grimy by chewing his shoes and shirts. Mark would stay on the floor for weeks during the summer to ride.We made this street/skatepark thing called pieconic one summer. We had the best time riding ever. Me Mark Russ Justin an all the medford locals progressed so much back then but when the place got shut down we diden't have a place to do any thing we learned so we lost them and we where bummed,but mark was on the grind trying to ride. He used to take the train into the city and the bus to philly be for any of us thought about riding out side the island. We where pretty young to go that far back in the day .We soon parted ways mark was all ways in the city and we where riding russ's ramp in his back yard .I think we didn't ride together for like 2 years and then mark came out on a cali trip to ride an stayed at our apartment. When we came back to the east we would meet up with mark in philly an cruise. Mark No's philly like the back of his hand so it is all ways fun. I cant wait till it gets a lil warmer. Sessions allday an night. Mark 's riding is as tru and original as him. Marks keeps it real.

Muta is a poet that sprang up in the early roots reggae era late 70s,he looked at getting his message threw different from everyone else that was laying down tracks. He seen that alot of his friends where putting in work and not reaping the reward they deserve. Alot of the record companies used the songs and played them on the rock radio sations in America, England and Japan. The artist never seen any cash flow, but where big reggae stars in those country's. Muta wanted to support the cause, but be as independent as he could be, so he started putting out books of poems which the hole project consisted around what he wanted from start to finish. From the color, to how the book was made, to the publisher, how it got published, and what material was used to make it . Muta spits heavy fire when it comes down to life ,no matter who you are or what you do he can guide you to find your self in any giving situation you are in (you can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink). Muta has traveled so many places holding Rastafari to the full while embracing other eastern philosophy's. I recently just got a chance to talk with him it was very very irie. .

On a female plant buds would sprout from that area where you see the little seed sacks.Hemp seeds are the edible part of the cannabis sativa plant. To attain optimum health we must eat foods that contain live enzymes, active phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids, and essential fatty acids. These elements are termed "essential" because the human body does not produce them. They must come from the food we eat. Hemp seed is one of the plant kingdom's most concentrated, complete and balanced sources of essential amino acids (EAA's) and essential fatty acids (EFA's). Hemp seeds are high in essential nutrients including chlorophyll, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, phytosterols, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, calcium, fiber, histidine, iron, potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin, niacin and thiamin.

Hemp seed protein has many advantages when compared to soy, the most commonly used form of supplemental plant protein. Soy protein contains high levels of enzyme inhibitors blocking the uptake of trypsin and other enzymes the body uses for protein digestion. Eating a diet high in enzyme inhibitors, such as those contained in soy, can result in chronic amino acid and protein deficiencies.

Hemp seed is rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids as well as being one of the few plant sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Cancer, Diabetes, Osteoporosis …

• Meat and Diabetes:
A high consumption of saturated fatty acids can lead to an insulin resistance and encourages the development of diabetes mellitus. Animal products generally contain a lot of saturated fatty acids.

• Meat and Obesity:

Saturated fatty acids further the development of being overweight. Being overweight is a risk factor for heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and circulatory disorders.

• Meat and Bones:

On the average, meat products contain more phosphorus then calcium. A raised phosphorus/calcium ratio results in an increased release of calcium from the bones. As some studies have shown, there is a close relationship between a high dietary consumption of phosphates and a raised risk of osteoporosis and broken bones.

• Meat and Cancer:

The National Institute of Health, the largest medical research institution in the world, determined in 2001 an increased risk of cancer with the consumption of red meat. Argentina and Uruguay are some of the world’s largest consumers of beef and also belong to the countries with the highest rates of breast and colon cancer.

A study by the University of Minnesota published in September 2002 shows that the consumption of barbecued red meat promotes the development of pancreatic cancer.

• Meat and Inflammation and Pain: Animal products contain high levels of arachi donic acid, which forms inflammatory substances. These can lead to the development of neuro dermatitis, inflammation of the small intestines or colon, asthma, arthritis and rheumatism.

• Meat and Heart Attacks and Arterio sclerosis: A too-high intake of iron brought on by the consumption of red meat is a dangerous source of free radicals that damage the blood vessels. The risk of a heart attack increases, particularly with men.

Fish is the muscle of a cold-blooded, animal with fins and gills. The major components of fish are fat and protein. There is no carbohydrate, no dietary fiber, or no vitamin C in fish. Because many fish are high on the food chain they are highly contaminated with environmental chemicals – it is not unusual to read in the newspaper that certain kinds of fish, such as swordfish, tuna, or shark, contain sufficient levels to be considered a health hazard. For example, because of their high content of mercury, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant to not eat swordfish, king mackerel, tile fish, shark, or fish from mercury contaminated areas.

Fish is high in fat – often 60% of the calories come from fat. This fat is effortlessly incorporated into a person’s body fat – contributing to the risk of obesity. Fish fat is usually associated with a low risk of cancer. Kenny Hirsch is one of our best friends that used to shred hard he got into an accident a few years back but he's been coming back strong hitting the gym and working him self back to the best he can be. He has made a 100% come back from when the accident first happened. I really don't like to call it an accident because everything happens for a reason and what ever don't kill you make's you stronger and kenny has grown so much, he is one to tell you what life is really worth. Kenny has been apart of the longislandbikeshop fam ever since they opened. Still to this day he play's a big part helping out Dean and Julie run the shop. The first 3 ladies where the back up singers for Bob Marley & The Wailers. Rita was the lead, and her 2 best friends as her back up. These ladies put in work they laid solo albums down while working on the wailers albums too. Althea & Donna laid down their album in the summer of 78 for fun. The two hated the music industry and only wanted to deal with Rastafari . After their album became a hit in England many record companies wanted to sign them but they were only in it to spread the message. Russ and I have had the Rita's for a while but I just got the others and they are heavy as well. I recommend these to any woman into Rastafari or trying to learn more these ladies are the mothers of reggae.

Rasta women played a big role in reggae at that time but only put out a few albums . The reason for this is the women felt the dutty to bring children into the world to be mothers so they could bring forth more postive rasta people. They also thought that the music bussiness was politics,and had a bigger role in life as mothers. They never hated on the men thoe they pushed for them to keep it going because it was the only way to get the meassage threw fast, after a few albums many artist took breaks for many years an lived in the bush an rasied kids to make sure they had roots an culture.

My uncle Paul used to tell me stories how he used to run with these guys when he lived in Manchester, England.Many carribbean people following Marcus Garvey came to the United States an England to help set up the U.N.I.A(united negro improvement association).My uncles parents where from Barbados an active Garveyites they traveled to London and Harlem in the early 40s keeping the Garvey vibe alive.Their in Manchester,England they had my uncle Paul during there travels. They stayed in England for a couple years traveling back and forth to Barbados and England. As my uncle grew up he started taking up Rastafari as a youth on the island.We still have fam in England, so he would travel back and forth to vist. Rastafari was getting bigger to the youths, and many reggae bands started popping up in the carribbean population in England one of the hardest bands to pop up in the early 70s was Aswad. They laid some heavy songs.I found these old videos of them befor he moved to Brooklyn so he was for sure chillin with them around this era of there music. He said "We used to smoke chalice ,eat ital food and read Selassie speeches thats what built iani" I wont ever forget that story, he also used to chill with Steel Pulse. Paul used to say back in them days it was Rastafari it's not like the people are some big music super star like these days we are in now, and they to busy to hang out with the regular people,he said any time any band from Bob Marley to Aswad we hung out with them they are Rastas thats it. jah messenger for peace.We all are jah messengers for peace.

Shawn is a fountian of information when it comes to the knowledge of Rastafari. He can go on for hours without a second gap of silence in the conversation. It trully is impressive. This photo was shot at some school in Cali, that has the best flat rails you have ever seen. This also happens to be one of my favorite photos of Shawn.

This was shot while filming for Summer of Fit. The school that we were at was straight out of a video game. It seriously had everything you could ever want to ride there. It is still without a doubt the best school i have ever been to.

The mounth of February is considered black history mouth iani dont think you can sum African history in one mounth that is a ignorant thing to do. Every mounth is African history without african history their would be no history. I wounder why there is no white history mounth there should be. African history surely diden't begin when the first ships where coming on shore to the Americas. I think they created this to put African people on front st an alot of non rasta black and white people follow this way trying to learn their history or others in one mounth. We should be educated with each others history all the time so we can vibe off each other in a good way.

Todays is Dennis Browns birthday he has over 20 complete albums rated number 1 among roots reggae artist. I bought a mix dennis brown cd on Jamaica av in queens a while ago that had every song he ever made because finding all the albums was really hard most of them are still on record but i found a spot in cali called Amoeba records in Hollywood an San Fran an they have every thing you need. Collecting music is important to the rasta because some people just listen to reggae music an some people live reggae music an when the vibes need to be right the only thing that dose it is word sound and power. This music also plays apart for bringing up kids showing them how to live righteous. The reggae artist that came out in the late 60s 70s an 80s are very important because these were the youth that talked first of the hills men they saw living a simple life style. These albums have perfect blueprints of the struggle once you become Rastafari an what others are going to say to you ,it gives you strength when times is getting hard. Many albums explained how to go back to Africa build your own community an unite all races but times has changed since then you need all kinds of doctors to get to Africa ras na deal with them iani deal with herbs an bush for sickness. A couple ras is working on making some islands African states soon.

Feb in the northeast is cultivation pregame for all seed planters of any type of fruit or veggie and trail builders. Makeing sure you start to collect the things you will need to start up your field or trails. Starting at the end of feb beginning of march there might be some spring like days which will allow the soil to soften extremly almost into mud. Preparing to get the right fertilizers is essential if you are planting organic like we do sometimes its hard to get your hands on the real stuff, stuff bought in stores is sometimes watered down with added ingredients also makeing sure that where ever you set your field up there are no one useing non organic fertilizers on what ever they are growing because when it rains its all going to mix and you will not have organic grown crops. Locating your local farm or someone you kno with a horse stable that feeds firm full grain grass to ther animals is a good source of high grade fertilizer. Winston Rodney aka Burning Spear has laid some of the hardest roots reggae albums of all time. Spear got put on to reggae around 1967 by bob marley, Spear had lived in the same parish Saint Anns Bay also this was the town where Marcus Garvey grew up. Spear asked bob how he got into that reggae an he said he started selling ganja an fruits at the local market in Kingston for studio time.The parish where they lived was all the way across the island so they would farm for a full year an then make the trip to Kingston to sell their goods, the studio was also in kingston. Bob had a head start because he had moved from Saint Ann's to Kingston for a year an started hanging with the wailers around studio 1 ran by famos mixer cox son dood. Bob headed back to saint anns to build a farm an got things going quick.While bob had laid down his first two albums with the wailers. Spear had just saved up to get to kingston an studio time. When spear went to his first audition they select him,after that he has been going hard ever since no spear album would be considered complete without a tribute to Marcus Garvey his home town guider. Bob had made his first few albums real hard but the lyrics where for everyone but Spear on the other hand came at his albums mad and expressed the rastafari feelings of selassie ganja, equal rights, marcus garvey, and Africa so his albums only sold to the core listeners but after bob had toured around the world more an more rastas started popping up that weren't black so around 1972 spear albums started to pick up demand for his first few albums put out in 69.Spears music is for deep mediation an a clear minds.My uncle put i on so i been collecting them for a few years here are some of them he has so many more an still pumping them out hard an heavy these are some of his best work that i have from his early days.
